Abrasive Technology has patented and manufactures burs out of composite material, a resin reinforced by zircon-rich glass fiber.

These burs, called STAINBUSTER® burs, were initially designed to gently remove cement, stains and coloured coatings from the surface of the enamel: they do not abrade tooth enamel nor ceramic and only lightly grind cement, dentin and filling composites. Their range of use has since then been widened subsequent to clinical trials.

MODE OF ACTION

The special caracteristic of these burs is the presence of fiber sections with abrasive power which cover the entire working surface and which split up into small fragments as and when they act on a hard surface. At the same time, the resin matrix is used up, exposing new sections of fibers : these burs are also therefore self-sharpening whilst continuously maintaining their abrasive power.

IMPORTANT: STAINBUSTER® burs act as grinding instruments, not as cutting burs: they act by grinding layer after layer. Therefore, to be efficient, they must be used at low speed with little pressure ; high speed and strong pressure would only lead to faster wear and would lessen their abrasive power.

The surface of the working end offers cutting sections of zircon-glass fibers surrounded by resin: they provide the abrasive effect on the different coatings, cements and exogenous deposits that are to be removed from the dental surfaces.
STAINBUSTER® BURS ARE PAINLESS BURS

STAINBUSTER® burs do not affect the soft tissues such as the gingival fibro-mucous membrane as they slide over them without cutting or grinding.

A STAINBUSTER® bur being used on a very sensitive area with no need for anesthesia.
This quality, and the fact that the instrument hardly heats up during use, makes the process virtually pain free, hence its easy acceptance by patients compared to other instruments and methods.

ABRASIVE POWER

STAINBUSTER® burs show no abrasiveness towards dental enamel or the ceramics used in dentistry.
They have a slight abrasive effect on the cement dentin and filling and bonding composites used in dentistry.
Their abrasive power has been measured as being two and a half times more abrasive than toothpaste (University of Indiana).
RISK ANALYSIS & BIO-COMPATIBILITY

The zircon-rich glass fiber is particularly interesting, as unlike ordinary glass fiber, it does not split up into minuscule fibrils extremely irritating to the skin and mucous membrane.

Zircon-rich glass fiber is 14 μm in diameter. It breaks or fragments into particles, not fibrils, which are always longer than 5 μm with a length/diameter ratio of over 3.

They are therefore not "breathable"
, in other words, they cannot penetrate the alveoli pulmonis, according to criteria and values defined by the World Health Organisation.

This patented * characteristic allows it to be used for dental burs with permanent abrasive power.

According to the international standard ISO 7405 concerning the preclinical evaluation of biocompatibility of medical devices used in dentistry, the following test have been carried out:

Test type
Normative reference
Test result
Test report No.
Cytotoxicity Standard ISO 10993-5
Negative
2003-DGM483-1
Acute toxicity in the mouse Standard ISO 10993-11, EN 30993-11
Negative
2003-DQZ-623-1
Dermal irritation in the rabbit Standard ISO 10993-10
Negative
2003-DQZ-623-2
Sensitisation in the guinea pig Standard ISO 10993-10
Negative
2003-DQZ-623-3

In conclusion: the use as well as the manufacturing of STAINBUSTER® burs offer no risk to human health.
