How Abrasive Technology Helped Build Modern Manufacturing

Some innovations don't just improve industries—they redefine what's possible. For over fifty years, Abrasive Technology's superabrasive innovations have driven precision, efficiency, and performance across manufacturing, aerospace, medical devices, electronics, and industrial sectors.

A look back: Ed Tausch, Dick Sullivan, Butch Peterman, and Pete Lowder—helping shape Abrasive Technology from the early days.

The Breakthrough That Started It All

In 1971, four former General Electric engineers invested in a four-room Worthington facility to solve a critical problem: conventional abrasive tools wore down quickly, lost particles, and generated performance-compromising heat.

Their solution? P.B.S.® brazing—a proprietary process that chemically bonds each diamond crystal directly to a metal substrate. At the time, experts considered it nearly impossible to securely attach such hard materials without damage.

The first product to utilize this proprietary process was Two Striper®. This revolutionary diamond dental bur became their first product to demonstrate P.B.S.® brazing's full potential of cutting faster, lasting longer, and maintaining consistent performance. This technology would lay the groundwork for future expansion into aerospace, industrial, medical, and electronics sectors.

Watch more on how it all started here:

From Startup to Global Leader

By the mid-1970s, Abrasive Technology had moved to a larger Lewis Center, Ohio facility and was expanding into industrial markets worldwide. In the years that followed, several company acquisitions were made, further expanding capabilities
and Abrasive Technology’s name around the world.

In 1992, Butch Peterman became sole owner, driving innovation through digital advancements in electronics and chip manufacturing. Patented technologies like the VFLEX® process for resin bond centerless wheels further cemented the company's leadership in advanced manufacturing.

In 2021, Abrasive Technology would be acquired by Blue Sea Capital. This acquisition provided the company to further grow and expand their capabilities. In 2024, the dental market welcomed a newest brand Prodia® Dental. Building off of the success of the legendary Two Striper®, Prodia® would deliver next generation technology to everyday dentistry, further expanding Abrasive Technology’s dental portfolio of brazed and premium electroplated dental instruments.
